Origins

The CCTC, formerly the Canadian Council on Smoking and Health (CCSH), was founded in 1974 by non-governmental organizations concerned with the tobacco epidemic such as the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Lung Association.

Mission

Gathering and sharing tobacco control information, the CCTC strives to ensure that knowledge truly informs effective action to improve the health of Canadians and of the global community. The CCTC creates and maintains knowledge networks that connect people with people as well as the information they need using evidence-based information processing and knowledge brokering.

Membership

The Canadian Council for Tobacco Control recognizes that action on tobacco issues requires a strong and effective tobacco control movement that enables health advocates at the local, provincial, territorial and national levels to work together to diminish the adverse impact on the health of Canadians caused by tobacco industry products.

Membership in CCTC indicates a commitment to tobacco control in Canada, and a belief in the important role that knowledge mobilization and transfer play in supporting effective action on tobacco issues. Please see our Membership page for more information.

CCTC reserves the right to refuse or revoke the membership of any individual or organization whose activities it believes to be inconsistent with our mission and goals.

Membership is non-refundable.

Our Funders

CCTC programs are the result of sustained efforts and collaboration from people and organizations across Canada. The Canadian Council for Tobacco Control thanks all its supporters in making possible the identification, creation, and dissemination of tobacco control information. In doing so, it is actively contributing to the realization of longstanding goals in tobacco prevention, cessation, protection and denormalization.

The continued support and foresight of federal and provincial governments, and of NGOs such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Cancer Society, enables the CCTC to support and enhance the ability of individuals, health intermediaries, and communities to take action in tobacco control. They have enabled the sharing of ideas and knowledge that will allow us to move towards a tobacco free society.

The Canadian Council for Tobacco Control is funded (listed in order of per capita funding) by:
