6th National Conference on Tobacco or Health Resolution
The 6th National Conference on Tobacco or Health resolves that the next National Strategy be developed expeditiously and that the Strategy:
• looks to short-term and long-term time horizons;
• builds on previous National Strategies;
• meaningfully engages governments, non-government organizations, health professionals, academia, consumers and other Canadians;
• ensures sustained tobacco control funding proportional to the burden from tobacco use, and proportional to the tobacco tax revenues raised;
• utilizes a comprehensive approach that includes effectively addressing initiation (especially youth), providing support to consumers, reducing exposure to tobacco smoke, and controlling the tobacco industry, and;
• includes effective action on contraband, implementation of plain/standardized packaging, and implementation of a robust mass media campaign that lays the groundwork with Canadians for adoption of effective tobacco control measures.
