"The Supreme Court of Canada will consider whether the federal government, which collected cigarette taxes and helped with industry research through much of the 20th century, should be potentially liable for health costs associated with smoking.
The court granted leave to appeal Thursday to the federal government, which tobacco firms want to include as a third-party defendant in a lawsuit launched by the B.C. government to recoup billions of dollars spent on caring for ill smokers."--from website.
