Comprehensive, evidence-based tobacco control strategies, along with community, regional, national actions and government initiatives can contribute to the reduction in the health burden, through the prevention of tobacco-related disease and death.

Robert Proctor, Stanford University historian, warns that globally, the tobacco industry continues to create toxic products that cause not just lung cancer but also maladies such as cataracts, ankle fractures, early onset menopause, spontaneous abortion and erectile dysfunction.

Examines if smoking prevalence is higher in European Union Member States with high levels of public sector corruption. In univariate analysis, smoking prevalence was significantly higher in countries with higher scores for corruption, material deprivation, and gender inequality; and lower in countries with higher per capita Gross Domestic Product, social spending, life satisfaction and human development scores.

Analzyes data from repeated cross-sectional surveys of individuals older than 15 years old living in Montreal. Findings demonstrate ever tobacco use increased among individuals with a low level of education while current smoking decreased and quit ratios increased among individuals with a high level of education. Authors determine smoking inequalities in Montreal are increasing.

A review of the crisis management successes of the U.S. tobacco industry, and an analysis of the 1997 settlement between the industry and 22 state attorneys-general for tobacco litigation.
