Smoke-Free Spaces

Document Actions

Creating spaces free of toxic secondhand smoke has been a major issue in Canada for decades. The Canadian Public Health Association traces the early history of smoking restrictions, from airplanes in 1971 to workplaces in Vancouver in 1986.

Since then, advocates have fought successfully for more smoke-free spaces. Researchers have provided ammunition through studying air quality and people’s behaviour and attitudes. Policy-makers have responded by creating and enforcing laws.
