Provincial and local laws have been used to create and enforce smoke-free spaces. This section provides studies on and compendia of such laws.

Cities and towns often pave the way for provincial legislation with municipal bylaws (known as local ordinances in the US). When critical mass is reached, provinces can then enact legislation more easily.
